What is carded fleece?
A carded fleece is a package of wool that has been washed, sometimes has been coloured and has been carded but not yet combed into a wool roving. It is voluminous, nicely mixed and retains a lot of the woolly proporties of the sheep.
What is carded felting wool?
Carded batts are what you get when the washed and cleaned wool is run through a drum roller. Woollen mills do this on a grand scale. When the wool is put through a drum it sorts the fibres out a little so they still lay in a criss cross fashion so they aren’t all bunched up and lumpy. A carded batt.

Can you wet felt with carded wool?
The fleece is washed, teased out, and carded into batts (large thick sheets of wool). What wool is best for wet felting?
What is the best wool for wet felting? Merino wool has a soft, very fine texture and a natural crimp that is ideal for wet felting. Merino is easy to find, easy to work with, and comes in an array of beautiful colors. Shetland, lambswool, Corriedale, Romney, and Leicester also wet felt well.

To a felter, this abundance of raw fleeces must seem like an ideal situation. And I certainly think it is. But, the process of turning raw fleece into carded wool is quite time-consuming. And that is what this post is really about.
What happens to the Fleece after shearing?
