What does Pseudallescheria boydii cause?

Posted on 2020-08-22 by Muna Meyer

What does Pseudallescheria boydii cause?

Pseudallescheria boydii has a worldwide distribution in soil and contaminated water. This fungus is also known as Monosporium apiospermum or Scedosporium apiospermum when it is in the asexual state. Although rare, CNS infection can result in brain abscesses or chronic neutrophilic meningitis.

What is Scedosporium infection?

Scedosporium apiospermum, or its teleomorph (sexual stage) P. boydii, causes sinusitis, pneumonia, and disseminated infections in immunocompromised hosts and mycetoma in immunocompetent patients. Deeply invasive infections due to S. apiospermum have been reported to carry a high mortality.

How do you treat Scedosporium?

Voriconazole demonstrates strong in vitro activity against Scedosporium spp and is considered first-line treatment. For fusariosis treatment, voriconazole, lipid formulations of amphotericin B, and various combinations should be considered as the optimal alternatives.

What is the appropriate specimen for the isolation of Pseudallescheria Boydii?

boydii was isolated from several urine samples. The detection of fungi in culture required between three and 16 days (3–11 on SGA and 4–16 days with the WS-BHI enrichment method) of incubation.

Is Scedosporium a mold?

Scedosporium apiospermum/boydii is more of a moderately rapid growing dematiaceous mold whose conidia lack septae. Its hyphae are nonpigmented but its microconidia (seen only in culture) are melanized. The mold has a light gray or brown surface in either state.

What disease does Fusarium cause?

Fusarium species are important plant pathogens causing various diseases such as crown rot, head blight, and scab on cereal grains (72), and they may occasionally cause infection in animals (32).

Is mucormycosis serious?

Mucormycosis. Mucormycosis (previously called zygomycosis) is a rare but serious angio-invasive infection caused by a group of fungi called mucormycetes.

Which of the following infectious diseases is Pseudallescheria Boydii the most common etiologic agent?

Pseudallescheriasis. Although Pseudallescheria boydii is the most common cause of mycetoma in the United States,172-174 pulmonary infection is rare.
