What is VLAN and why it is used?

Posted on 2019-11-07 by Muna Meyer

What is VLAN and why it is used?

VLANs allow network administrators to automatically limit access to a specified group of users by dividing workstations into different isolated LAN segments. When users move their workstations, administrators don’t need to reconfigure the network or change VLAN groups.

What are VLANs — the simplest explanation?

VLAN is a logical grouping of networking devices. When we create VLAN, we actually break large broadcast domain in smaller broadcast domains. Consider VLAN as a subnet. Same as two different subnets cannot communicate with each other without router, different VLANs also requires router to communicate.

What are the benefits of VLAN?

VLANs provide the following advantages:

  • VLANs enable logical grouping of end-stations that are physically dispersed on a network.
  • VLANs reduce the need to have routers deployed on a network to contain broadcast traffic.
  • Confinement of broadcast domains on a network significantly reduces traffic.

What are three advantages of VLANs?

VLANs provide a number of advantages including ease of administration, confinement of broadcast domains, reduced network traffic, and enforcement of security policies.

What is VLAN port?

A VLAN is a set of end stations and the switch ports that connect them. Like a bridge, a VLAN switch forwards traffic based on the Layer 2 header, which is fast. Like a router, it partitions the network into logical segments, which provides better administration, security, and management of multicast traffic.

What is the benefit of VLAN?

What does VLAN stand for?

VLAN: Virtual Local Area Network: VLAN: Very Large Area Network (satellite communication)

What is VLAN and how it works?

Default VLAN. When a switch gets booted up for the first time, all the ports of the switch will turn to default’s VLAN member.

  • Data VLAN. Data VLAN is termed User VLAN because it helps to carry the traffic generated by the user.
  • Voice VLAN. Voice VLAN has the configuration to carry the voice traffic over the network.
  • Native VLAN.
  • Management VLAN.
  • What is the purpose of a VLAN?

The resources and servers of other users in the colocation facility will be invisible to each of the other VLAN members.

  • Since all packets traveling between VLANs may also pass through a router, standard router-based security measures can be implemented to restrict access as needed.
  • VLANs provide enhanced network security.
  • What exactly is a VLAN?

    – Physical switch is set to TRUNK mode – dot1q encapsulation is enabled – Spanning-tree is set to portfast trunk (for example, port forwarding, skips other modes) – Define VLAN interface – Assign IP Range to VLAN interface – VLAN Routing – and VLAN Isolation Caution: Native VLAN ID on ESXi/ESX VST Mode is not supported.
