What are Pavegen tiles made out of?
The tiles are made from nearly 100-percent recycled materials (mostly rubber) and some marine grade stainless steel. They can be retrofitted to existing structures and are waterproof as well as designed to withstand outdoor conditions.
How is Pavegen made?

The first generation tile was made from recycled polymer, with the top surface made from recycled truck tires. Power is generated when a footfall compresses the slab by about 5 mm (0.2 in).
How do kinetic floor tiles work?
Kinetic tiles work because certain materials will generate an electrical current when they are placed under mechanical stress by, in this case, being stepped on. This is called the piezoelectric effect!

Does Pavegen use piezoelectricity?
Power is generated when the tile is compressed. It uses the piezoelectric effect – the ability of certain materials to generate an electrical current when compressed – as well as induction, through numerous tiny copper coils and magnets, to create a charge.
