What is a rawhide rope?
The rawhide reata was a long braided rawhide rope used by the early Mexican Vaqueros and was, no doubt, first introduced into Mexico by the Spanish conquerors. Though the word reata is often used to refer to any rope; the genuine Vaquero reata was, and is now, a special item.
How do rawhides work?
To use:
- Rawhide must be wet to use. Soak in lukewarm to warm water for 5 to 45 minutes (depending on thickness of the hide and desired wet-noodleness)
- Remove from the water and pre-stretch the hide, prior to use.
- Tie, twist, wrap, hitch, cord, etc.
- Know that rawhide will shrink as it dries.
What is braided rawhide used for?
Use it to fix saddles, mend fence or wrap around your foot to hold on a floppy boot sole. In a crunch, tie a strand in a loop to substitute for an engagement ring. It’s no surprise, then, that the versatile Argentine gaucho would make use of this do-it-all material in the trenzas tradition of rawhide braiding.
